At five years old, she was learning piano by ear after becoming impatient with lesson books. She taught herself Dire Straits' "Walk of Life," wrote an earnest letter asking Mark Knopfler to play her elementary school talent show, and spent countless hours wearing out a pink MP3 player loaded with everything from Peter Gabriel to America. Somewhere between Betty Buckley's Memory, Frank Zappa's Peaches en Regalia, and Van Morrison's Moondance, she discovered that music wasn't just something she loved...
It was how she understood the world.
Today, Pittsburgh-based singer-songwriter Megan Paullet has become one of the Pittsburgh’s fastest-rising independent artists, blending powerhouse vocals with soulful songwriting rooted in classic influences like Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Sara Bareilles, and Joni Mitchell. Whether fronting her eight-piece soul, funk, and pop-rock band, Megan Paullet & The HR Department, performing intimate solo concerts, or collaborating across genres, Megan has built a reputation for performances that feel equal parts concert and conversation.
Since deciding to pursue music full-time in 2024, Megan's career has accelerated rapidly. She has performed for the NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Wizards, and alongside the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, while appearing at festivals and stages throughout the country. She has shared bills with artists including John Hall (Orleans), Los Lonely Boys, Petey Pablo, Josh Gallagher, Mike Massé, and FRZY, and has performed everywhere from Heinz Hall and Stage AE to Cheyenne Frontier Days, Picklesburgh, Highmark First Night Pittsburgh, and festivals across the East Coast.
Her work has earned recognition from the Recording Academy, where she joined the 2026 New Member Class, along with honors including Iron City Rocks Songwriter of the Year and multiple Josie Music Award nominations. Along the way, she's accumulated millions of performance impressions while remaining fiercely independent, building her career one show, one song, and one genuine connection at a time.
Ironically, Megan never formally studied music. A certified elementary and special education teacher by trade, she spent years balancing classrooms, church music programs, and side gigs before finally deciding to bet on herself. Long before that leap, though, music had already quietly become the thread connecting every chapter of her life. She played organ in church at ten years old, switched from flute to tuba in middle school, competitively marched in her high school band, and eventually traded competitive swimming for musical theatre after realizing the stage felt more like home than the starting blocks ever had.
Today, Megan approaches every opportunity with the same curiosity that first led a six-year-old girl to teach herself songs she wasn't "supposed" to know yet, and that passion extends far beyond the stage. Megan believes music has the power to build community, amplify voices, and create meaningful change. As a former educator, she remains deeply committed to preserving and celebrating music education, while using her platform to encourage the next generation of artists. She is equally passionate about advocating for women in music, helping create spaces where more women can lead, create, and thrive throughout every corner of the industry.
Whether she's performing for thousands at a festival, mentoring a young musician, or sharing a quiet song with a room full of strangers, her goal remains the same: to leave people feeling seen, inspired, and reminded that music has the remarkable ability to bring us together.
For Megan, that's always been the point.
